Whilst many physiotherapists and physical therapists are passionate about their profession, John Xerri de Caro, could only be described as committed. A lifelong interest in water polo, gained in the Mediterranean Sea surrounding his island home of Malta, led John to the physiotherapy profession and a particular interest in the athletic shoulder. John’s practice is located within the National Pool complex in Gzira where he leads the provision of physiotherapy services to all of the National Aquatic teams.
Like many people from small nations John is acutely aware of the imbalances of power that often sees their opinions sidelined, so he has taken it upon himself to put Maltese physiotherapy on the map. In short time John’s leadership has extended globally as an executive member of the World Physiotherapy board – where he has a particular interest in ensuring smaller nations are consulted and heard.
Looking across our global profession, John believes that the word ‘therapy’ in our title is limiting our growth. He said, “It does not do justice to the complexity and responsibility of the consultation”. Leading by example, John shortened the name of his own practice from The Physiotherapy Suite to ‘The Physio Suite’, and for his website registered the shorter domain name www.thesuite.physio.
John is a strong supporter of the .physio domain extension and was delighted to see World Physiotherapy change their website address to www.world.physio. He said of the .physio domain extension,
“It is a unifier for our profession, building connections that transcend national boundaries.”
John continued, “With the .physio domain extension small practices and small nations can share the same identity with larger businesses and organisations, allowing us all to capitalise on the brand”.
During the Covid-19 lockdown of mid 2020 John reviewed his old brochure-type website to make it more engaging and useful, adding telehealth service provision and online consultation bookings.
John understands that by removing many cost barriers to broader communication the Internet gives small businesses and small nations the opportunity to match their bigger neighbours. But even better, with initiatives like the .physio domain extension they can join with their bigger neighbours to leverage value from our greater collective.
