It’s relatively easy to become an expert. With natural passion, curiosity drives you to learn and eventually you know more about the topic than most others. The difficult part is getting that expertise recognised

You can tell people and you can show them that you are an expert, but one person at a time is agonisingly slow. If only there were away to reach a broader audience in a quicker way? Well there is, and it’s called the Internet and with some clever strategies on top of your expertise, you can quickly develop become known as a world expert, such that people seek you out for it.

To really harness the power of the Internet you need a website and a domain/brand. A website tells people you are serious and it is a platform over which you have complete control. The domain/brand helps people make the connection between you and your area of expertise.

Meet David Hillard, AKA the basketball physio. David is a Sydney based Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist whose sports passions centre on of basketball. Along with owning the sports rehabilitation clinic Zone 34 Sports Physiotherapy, David is currently Head of Medical Services with the Australian Boomers (FIBA 3rd ranked men’s National basketball team) and lead physiotherapist with the Sydney Kings NBL team. With those credentials, it is fairly safe to acknowledge David as a legitimate expert.

Having worked with Basketball Australia teams since 2010, David became aware of Australian basketballers in USA college programs wanting more information about the diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of their injuries. With the goal of becoming an expert resource for young, upcoming players and their families, Dave created a website to better connect with athletes world wide.

To make it easier to be found online Dave needed a short, memorable and relevant domain/brand, that was easy to say and easy to type. With the incredibly powerful www.basketball.physio Dave says who he is, what he does and where to find him online in just a few words.

Dave’s website is fast becoming the go-to site for young basketballers to find information on repair, rehab and performance; vital elements for players who want more court time. And what player doesn’t want more court time?

Inspired by the Knee Program created by Alanna Antcliff (physiotherapist to the Australian Diamonds Netball Team) and Netball Australia, David is developing a library of injury risk reduction exercises and basketball rehabilitation drills that he hopes all developing basketballers and coaches will adopt. Through the provision of posts, images and videos on his website basketballers can access Dave’s expert knowledge wherever they are in the world. And the site will also be a portal for telehealth consultations for individuals seeking direct and immediate contact.

As Dave has shown, becoming a global expert physiotherapist within a sport has been made a whole lot easier with the Internet and some clever branding via the .physio domain extension.
